Back in the end of April, 2018 two turkey hunters in Indiana were shot, and it could have been avoided. With turkey season in full swing in most states that offer it, men, women, and children just starting out are heading into the woods and fields adorned in full camouflage to try and entice a big Tom into shotgun range. In Monroe County, Indiana that scenario unfolded as two hunters—set up on private land—were accidentally ambushed by another approaching hunter who did not know the two were there. The state DNR reported that the offending hunter was walking a field line toward the two men when he heard what he thought was a turkey and shot, hitting both of the other two hunters hidden near their decoy. While neither had life-threatening injuries, they both had to be transported to the hospital for observation and to get the pellets removed from their skin. Sadly, this entire episode could have been avoided, first by better vigilance and hunting safety procedure from the hunter that shot, and secondly by hunter safety systems such as the SafeShoot system. Both hunters could have been safely in the same woods as the shooter due to its unique radio frequency locator system that can be placed on anyone, even a dog. With turkey season almost over in some states, let’s hope that everyone is in on the great operational features that this system uses. |
